Artist Statement
I appreciate things that are simple. When something simple is given detail, diligence and purpose, it can become exceptional. That is why I aim to paint portraits that are subtle yet striking and forthright yet mysterious-portraits that say a lot with very little.
While these opposites are the foundation of my painting visually, they are used to convey the central idea of my work, and that is the self. The self is a person’s essential being that distinguishes you, from someone else. After photographing my model, I select a pose which highlights a strong characteristic of theirs and determine the layout.
I begin steadily adding oil paint from light to dark to highlight certain facial features through contrast, to create the desired mood visually and to highlight the model’s perceived identity. I prefer that the demeanor of each model be the prominent element of each piece and the variety of models I paint, be the prominent element in a series of paintings.
In line with my simple aesthetic, it is just as important deciding what not to do, as it is what to do. I often place my subject off-center to give the painting a sense of space and subtle movement. Using the blank space on the painting surface is as valuable a tool as any other and helps to define the feel of each painting.
Once a piece nears completion, I include final details and abstract touches in either imitation or real 23k gold leaf. I mindfully add the leaf to enhance the subject to it’s fullest, without distracting from it. Upon finishing, a basic portrait evolves into a haunting representation of the individual I have come to know.
