Artist Biography

Somewhere between a nightmare and a dream— that is where Harrison Serna-Zahn’s art resides. Specializing in oil painting, his simple yet dramatic aesthetic has defined his art since 2009. From Oklahoma City, he is a largely self-taught artist whose work hovers between real and surreal.

Serna-Zahn’s philosophy of do the most with the least is apparent in his emphasis of empty space while typically using only black paint to render his subject. Carefully planned gold or copper leaf accents are added as catching movement, partnering with his simple style.

He works diligently to create portraits that are clear and simple visually but thematically vague and engrossing. He hopes viewers find something timeless and beyond surface level in his work-something that ultimately leaves you with more questions than answers.

Serna-Zahn splits time between his hometown of Oklahoma City and that of his wife, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
